KUALA LUMPUR, 10 Dec 2009: As the world marks International Human Rights Day today, CARAM Asia launches an online petition campaign seeking crucial support and commitment from every employer of households to grant a weekly paid day off to their migrant domestic worker (MDW). From today onwards, the online campaign will be featured for 30 days on the major media online sites based in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, and the Middle East:

In Bahrain, the systematic discrimination against the Shiite majority was accompanied by more repression of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Human rights defenders increasingly became targets for arrest, trial, and smear campaigns. Some human rights defenders were even subjected by government agents to threats and intimidation while in Europe.

In an International Study to evaluate the performance of the State members in the UN’s Human Rights Council:
Bahrain adopts a wholesale of negative positions towards the promotion of human rights at the international level
Bahrain displayed negative results in its positions in human rights issues at the international level. Bahrain, as a member State in the UN’s Human Rights Council, took an opposing position towards 9 of 11 key issues regarding the promotion of human rights at the international level. While it declined taking a positive position in the remaining two issues.
GDN: Open border for Gaza students

BAHRAIN human rights activists have joined forces with their counterparts in the region to demand that Palestinian students trapped in Gaza be allowed to leave to resume their studies abroad.
Twenty-three rights groups, mostly from Egypt, have signed a petition calling on the Egyptian government to take measures that will facilitate the process.
They want the students to have immediate permission to pass through the Rafah boarder crossing to resume their studies in the universities they have enrolled in other countries.
