CPJ: Bahrain gags press as it cracks down on opposition

New York, August 31, 2010--Bahrainian prosecutors have banned journalists from reporting on the detentions of dozens of opposition activists, according to news accounts. The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on authorities to lift the censorship order immediately.

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expresses a serious concern about the increase in acts of violence which comes as a result of political and security unrest. This time it comes in an incident of attack that was reported by Mr. Muhannad Abu Zeitoun, chief editor of Alwatan newspaper. This incident took place in the morning of Wednesday, 26th August. He claimed that it resulted in a wound in his hand and the burning of a part of his car.

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expresses its concern for the Bahraini Authorities persistence in attempting to silence the voices and block and conceal the truth of the local and international public opinion, by targeting some journalists and writers, and which was this time resembled in summoning the journalist Mohammed Al-Sawad and questioning him on the charge of publishing news related to the former Minister Mansoor bin Rajab, and where the Public Prosecution had issued a decision of banning publishing anything related to his case.

A BAHRAINI journalists' leader yesterday called for an agreement to be reached over the issue of Al Jazeera satellite channel's activities in Bahrain.
Bahrain Journalists Association deputy chairman Faisal Abdulla Shaikh said that it was in the best interests of all that the dispute is immediately resolved.
He made the comments as a temporary ban on the channel reporting from Bahrain remained in place for the seventh day yesterday.
